Hundreds of years ago on a island lived Rona with her children and her husband. The island was surrounded by the ocean and trees as green as tuataras. Then one day Ronas husband said ‘‘The moon is going to be good for fishing, so I will take the boys you stay back and make a hangi for us when we get back.’’ Rona looked into the gourds and they were empty. ‘I will have to go get some water from the lake.’ Rona thought So Rona ran angrily off the beach up on to the path then suddenly the moon went behind a cloud. Rona couldn’t see she kicked her toe on a rock and then she yelled out to the moon boil your head, the moon herd Rona so the moon dived down and grabbed Rona by the waste. Rona held on to a nighio tree but the moon pulled so hard that nighio tree came out of the ground. When Rona’s husband and children were back all they saw was a uncooked hangi and no sign of Rona. but when they looked up at the moon and there was Rona up in the sky completely frozen.

Mangonui Harbour
Not so far from the shore, I hear boat engines as loud as barking dogs driving out to sea. I see seagulls diving like dolphins diving below the surface. There are clouds as fluffy as bunny tails in the blue sky. Stinky, yucky, slimy bait smells of rotten cheese, left there by fisherman. The salt water is as cold as a freezer.
